Dog Saved from Euthanasia After Reaching 68lbs—Animal Charity Helps Her Transform

Posted on March 7, 2025 By vudinhquyen

Honey, the beagle, faced potential euthanasia due to her weight of 68lbs, but was ultimately saved by an animal charity that guided her through a weight loss journey. Thanks to a strict diet and rehabilitation program, she managed to shed two-thirds of her body weight, making her available for adoption in the near future. Upon arriving at the SPCA of Niagara County in New York State, Honey was in poor condition, struggling to move with her belly dragging on the floor as she moved with her front paws.

Honey, a portly beagle, tipped the scales at 68 pounds when she was brought to a shelter in June. In the photos, she struggled to move around without her belly scraping on the ground.

By the end of December, Honey had reached significantly lower levels, thanks to all the effort that had been put in.

In the photo taken in July, Honey seemed to be in good spirits as she began shedding the excess weight.

She tipped the scales at 68 pounds, a considerable 40 pounds over the ideal weight for a healthy Beagle.

After being put on medication and increasing her daily walks, the excess weight began to melt off gradually. Additionally, Honey was struggling with incontinence issues. Living with an elderly owner who suffered from dementia, she was often overfed due to repeated forgetfulness. However, things took a positive turn when the SPCA intervened. Honey was prescribed medication and put on a strict exercise regimen, including walking on a water treadmill to make movement easier. Within just half a year, she successfully shed 40 pounds, resulting in a significant improvement in her overall well-being.

Moving Honey the beagle in June was quite a challenge as she made slow progress.

In the end, the dog found themselves attending rehabilitation sessions twice a week, getting their exercise in on a water treadmill.

In a recent photo comparison from June to October, the transformation of a foster dog named Honey is remarkable. Sue Cable, a volunteer for the SPCA and Honey’s foster mom, expressed her astonishment at how quickly Honey has progressed since being taken in. With the freedom to move around in a home, Honey has shown great improvement.

SPCA staff are hopeful that Honey will shed another five pounds before she is fully cleared for adoption. You can follow Honey’s journey on the Niagara County SPCA’s Facebook page for updates on her progress.

Come November, Honey was showing significant signs of improvement. The SPCA team noted that she seemed more content and in higher spirits.

Honey is progressing well and should reach a suitable weight for adoption in the coming months.

By November, Honey had transformed into a much healthier version of herself. No longer weighed down by excessive fat, she moved with ease, her gait no longer hindered by her once-massive belly. Her energy levels had drastically improved, and she seemed to enjoy her daily walks rather than struggle through them. The SPCA staff were amazed at her progress, and her foster mom, Sue Cable, couldn’t help but beam with pride at the remarkable change in her beloved beagle.

For the first time in what must have been years, Honey could engage in normal dog activities—running short distances, playing with toys, and even jumping onto a low couch with enthusiasm. This transformation not only restored her physical well-being but also boosted her confidence and spirit. Her eyes, once weighed down with exhaustion and sadness, now sparkled with life.

Honey’s foster mom was instrumental in her success. Sue dedicated herself to ensuring Honey stayed on track, preparing carefully measured meals and keeping her on her strict diet. She made sure Honey’s daily routine was full of movement, incorporating play sessions and short runs in the backyard. Through months of patience and dedication, Honey had gone from being at risk of euthanasia to having a real chance at a new life with a loving family.

Despite all the positive changes, the journey was not always smooth. There were days when Honey struggled, when her legs ached, and when the weight loss plateaued. She sometimes refused to move during her therapy sessions, needing encouragement to push forward. However, with gentle guidance and a strong support system, she always managed to keep going. Her progress was slow but steady, and the small victories kept adding up.

By December, Honey was nearly unrecognizable from the dog she had been just months prior. She had lost a total of 40 pounds, a feat that amazed not only her caregivers but also the many people who had followed her journey online. The SPCA of Niagara County had regularly shared updates on their social media pages, and Honey quickly amassed a following of people who cheered her on. Her story inspired many pet owners to take better care of their animals and recognize the dangers of obesity in pets.

The SPCA staff estimated that Honey needed just a few more pounds to be at her ideal weight. At that point, she would be cleared for adoption and could start the search for her forever home. The shelter had already received inquiries from potential adopters who had been touched by her story and were eager to provide her with a loving environment. Given her history, they sought a family that would continue to support her healthy lifestyle and ensure she never fell into the same cycle of overfeeding again.

As the new year approached, Honey celebrated her progress with a special outing. Sue and the SPCA team took her to a dog-friendly park where she could experience the joy of running freely on soft grass. Her tail wagged non-stop as she sniffed around excitedly, meeting other dogs along the way. It was a moment that truly showcased her newfound happiness and health.

The bond between Honey and Sue had grown incredibly strong during their time together. While Sue knew that fostering was temporary, she couldn’t help but feel a deep attachment to the sweet beagle. Honey had gone from struggling to move to racing through the yard, a testament to the power of compassion and proper care.

For potential adopters, Honey’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership. Dogs, like humans, need balanced diets and exercise to maintain a healthy weight. Overfeeding, even with good intentions, can lead to severe health issues, ultimately shortening a pet’s life. Honey’s transformation proved that, with dedication and the right interventions, even the most extreme cases could be turned around.

As winter set in, Honey continued to enjoy her new life, snuggling into warm blankets and playing with her favorite toys. Her next chapter was just around the corner, and with the love and care she had received, there was no doubt she would thrive in her forever home. The SPCA and her followers eagerly awaited the day when Honey would finally meet her perfect family, completing the journey she had fought so hard to achieve.
