Obi the ‘cheeky’ beagle throws a major tantrum and refuses to budge – forcing his owner to drag him along by his lead ‎

A grumpy beagle caused quite a scene by throwing a tantrum and refusing to move, prompting his owner to resort to dragging him along the floor by his leash. Video footage captured this incident, showing Gem Ross’ 10-month-old puppy, Obi, stubbornly lying on his stomach in her office after a disagreement. Despite Gem’s instructions for him not to play with toys that belong to other dogs, the mischievous puppy remained glued to the floor, fixated on the toys. In need of a coffee break, Gem urged Obi to get up and follow her, but he remained unmoved, much to her frustration.

Gem struggled to get her playful puppy, Obi, to move in the office. Despite being described as a classic beagle with regal, funny, lovely, cheeky, stubborn, and lazy qualities by his loving owner, Gem found herself having to use the lead to coax him along the floor. When she tried to make a cup of coffee and asked him to get up, he simply remained fixated on his toys, forcing her to resort to gently pulling him until he finally budged.

A video depicts Obi, a 10-month-old puppy, lying on his stomach in his owner Gem Ross’ office in the midst of a tantrum.

This week, Gem had a funny encounter with her playful puppy, Obi, who decided not to listen when told not to play with other dogs’ toys. Gem tried to get Obi to move, but he stubbornly stayed put, leaving Gem no choice but to gently drag him across the office floor. Gem assured that she didn’t hurt Obi in the process, adding a light-hearted touch by mentioning that no beagles were harmed.

Gem shared, “It was quite a scene! Having Obi at work never fails to bring a smile to everyone’s face. He’s always hungry, loves to sleep, and is quite the little trickster. He has a knack for eating things he shouldn’t and constantly tries to push his luck. Despite his mischievous side, Obi is a loving and loyal companion, always there when you need him.”

Gem affectionately characterized her puppy Obi as a quintessential beagle, embodying traits such as regality, humor, charm, cheekiness, stubbornness, and laziness. She recounted a humorous moment when she tried to rouse Obi from his slumber to no avail, prompting her to gently coax him out of his toy-filled daze.

Obi’s antics didn’t end there. Later that afternoon, after his infamous floor protest, he resumed his beagle business—namely, sniffing every inch of the office carpet as if it held the secrets of the universe. Colleagues passing by couldn’t help but laugh, some even kneeling to pet him or offer a belly rub, which Obi welcomed with regal approval. According to Gem, he’s become something of an unofficial office mascot.

“He brings joy, even when he’s being a bit of a diva,” Gem said, chuckling as Obi flopped onto his back for the third time that day, tail thumping against the floor in protest to any suggestion that he should do something productive—like, say, stand up.

While most dogs enjoy fetch or tug-of-war, Obi prefers games on his own terms. If someone throws a ball, he’ll chase it, sniff it, then walk away with a look that clearly says, “You can go get it.” His preferences tend to revolve around snacks, sneaky naps, and claiming any soft object—be it cushion, slipper, or someone’s lunch bag—as his rightful throne.

At only ten months old, Obi has already established a routine that suits his dramatic flair. Each morning, he insists on being carried into the office. Despite being perfectly capable of walking, he puts on a slow, sluggish display at the door until Gem gives in. “It’s like he’s saying, ‘Carry me, peasant,’” she joked.

Once inside, he does his rounds—greeting coworkers, checking under desks for crumbs, and settling into his favorite sunny spot by the window. Sometimes he’ll bark once, not out of demand but seemingly just to remind everyone that he’s there and should be adored.

One afternoon, Obi got into a bit of trouble after he managed to snatch an unattended sandwich off a desk. Caught red-pawed, he didn’t flee the scene. Instead, he sat proudly beside the empty wrapper, tail wagging, eyes gleaming with satisfaction.

“He’s got this way of making you forgive him instantly,” Gem said, shaking her head. “You want to be mad, but then he tilts his head and gives you that goofy look, and suddenly you’re the one apologizing.”

Despite his mischievous streak, Obi also shows a sweet, nurturing side. On particularly stressful workdays, he seems to sense when someone needs comfort. He’ll nuzzle their hand or sit quietly beside them until their breathing slows. “It’s like he knows,” said one coworker. “He’s more than just the office clown—he’s our emotional support pup.”

Weekends are a different story for Obi. Free from office routines, he embraces full-on lazy mode at home. Gem describes Saturdays as “Obi’s Spa Day,” where he lounges on the couch, occasionally shifting positions just enough to remain comfortable. She often finds him buried under blankets, with only the tip of his nose peeking out, completely still unless the crinkle of a snack bag cuts through the silence.

Obi’s presence in Gem’s life has been transformative. As someone who lives alone and works long hours, she never realized how much a beagle’s companionship could change her daily rhythm. “He forces me to slow down,” she said. “Whether I want to or not, I find myself sitting on the floor next to him, just existing in his little world.”

That world includes long walks—well, attempts at long walks. Most of the time, Obi makes it about ten minutes before flopping onto a patch of grass and refusing to budge. Gem keeps a foldable tote bag just for these occasions, humorously dubbed the “Obi Uber,” in which she carries him the rest of the way.

“I get strange looks, but at this point, I don’t even care,” she laughed. “He’s the boss.”

Obi’s fan base has grown significantly thanks to Gem’s videos and updates on social media. His viral tantrum video received thousands of views and comments, many from fellow beagle owners sharing their own stories of stubborn pups.

One comment read, “This is exactly how my beagle acts when he doesn’t get to eat what I’m eating. Total drama king!”

Another user wrote, “I laughed so hard! Beagles have the biggest personalities. Obi is a mood.”

Gem appreciates the light-hearted connection she’s been able to create with others through Obi. “It’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one being outsmarted daily by a dog with short legs and floppy ears,” she said.

Her favorite comments are the ones that show genuine affection, like, “Obi made my day today,” or “I was feeling down and seeing his video made me smile.” To her, that means more than likes or shares—it means Obi is doing what he does best: spreading joy, even from a prone position on the floor.

As Obi approaches his first birthday, Gem is planning a small celebration at the office. There’ll be pup-friendly treats, a silly hat he’ll definitely try to remove, and perhaps a tiny cake he’ll try to eat whole.

“He’s brought so much love and laughter into our lives,” she said. “It only feels right to celebrate him in the way he deserves—by letting him do absolutely nothing all day and being showered with attention.”

And so, Obi continues to be his grumpy, lazy, charming self—reminding everyone that sometimes, the best way to get through the day is to lie flat on your belly, ignore the noise, and only move when there’s a snack involved.

Even on his most defiant days, when he’s sprawled out in the middle of the hallway blocking foot traffic or subtly inching toward someone’s unattended lunch, Obi is adored by all who know him. His rebellion isn’t a problem—it’s a feature. A reminder that in a world that moves too fast, maybe it’s okay to slow down. Or, in Obi’s case, come to a complete stop and demand belly rubs.

Gem often finds herself reflecting on how such a small dog could bring such a huge shift in her life. “He’s taught me patience, humor, and the joy of living in the moment,” she said. “Even if that moment is spent lying on a cold office floor, refusing to move.”

As the video of his tantrum continues to bring smiles to strangers online, Obi remains blissfully unaware of his newfound fame. To him, he’s just doing what beagles do best: being adorable, being impossible, and most of all—being loved.
