As she exits the shelter, the happiest puppy can’t stop wagging its tail

Although shelter workers come across countless dogs during their careers, every once in a while, one dog captures their hearts in a way that’s hard to describe. Each shelter has that one special dog who seems to radiate something extraordinary, standing out among the many faces longing for a home. For the Douglas County Animal Shelter, that dog was Matilda.

Matilda was a small, beautiful puppy with soulful eyes and an irresistible charm. From the moment she arrived at the shelter, she made a strong impression on everyone she encountered. Unlike many dogs brought in from the streets, Matilda had a cheerful and affectionate demeanor that seemed almost too good to be true given her history.

In fact, the staff at the shelter quickly noticed something unusual about her behavior. Despite being newly admitted, she wasn’t shy or scared like many other dogs. Instead, she appeared excited, wagging her tail enthusiastically and trying to make friends with everyone around her. Her tail rarely stopped moving, and she greeted strangers with warm eyes and endless affection.

It was a surprising sight, especially when you consider what Matilda had gone through in her short life.

At just two months old, Matilda had already faced hardships that many animals never recover from. She had been living as a stray on the streets of Georgia, trying to survive on her own without the care of a mother or a safe place to rest. When the shelter finally rescued her, she was suffering from a painful skin condition and was infected with intestinal worms. Her tiny body bore the signs of neglect and discomfort, yet her spirit remained untouched.

Rather than cowering in fear or showing signs of aggression, Matilda wagged her tail with relentless joy. It was as if she had made a conscious choice to embrace life with love and positivity, no matter what challenges she had faced.

One of the volunteers at the shelter, Santina Sanders, shared her experience with The Dodo, a popular animal-focused media outlet. She said that Matilda was incredibly affectionate, constantly offering kisses to those who came near her. “She gives the most amazing kisses,” Sanders said. “She was honestly one of the most wonderful dogs I’ve ever met.”

Matilda’s positive energy didn’t just affect Sanders. Another organization called Peebles and More Animal Rescue also took notice of the special puppy. They were drawn to her not only because of her resilience but because of how naturally she interacted with other animals. She was gentle, friendly, and brought comfort even to the more anxious dogs around her.

One of the directors of the rescue group, Teresa Bulls Ciofalo, developed an immediate bond with Matilda. There was something deeply genuine about the young pup that made it impossible to ignore her. Teresa saw not just a rescue case, but a soul full of potential and love. Moved by this connection, Teresa made the decision to take Matilda out of the shelter and place her in a foster home where she could receive the love and care she deserved while waiting for her forever home.

When the day came for Matilda to leave the shelter, her joy was impossible to ignore. Her foster dad, Rich, arrived to pick her up, and from the moment she saw him, her tail began wagging with such force that her entire body swayed with it. It didn’t stop throughout the hour-and-a-half drive to her new temporary home.

It became quickly apparent that Matilda had a unique way of walking—not because of any physical issue, but because of the sheer strength of her tail wagging. Her whole body seemed to follow the rhythm of her tail, giving her an endearingly crooked walk that only made her more lovable.

Life in her new foster home brought even more joy to Matilda. She was surrounded by kind humans, playful toys, and furry siblings who welcomed her with open paws. She adjusted quickly, playing endlessly with her foster brothers and sisters and exploring every corner of her new environment. Her favorite activities included tug-of-war games, chasing squeaky toys, and snuggling up on the couch after a long day of play.

However, there was one minor hiccup in this otherwise perfect transition—Matilda hated collars.

When Rich first tried to put a collar around her neck, her reaction was immediate and uncharacteristically subdued. The wagging stopped. Her joyful demeanor vanished, and she looked visibly uncomfortable. It was clear that something about the collar brought back a memory or fear that even her sunny disposition couldn’t hide.

Understanding her reaction, Rich decided not to push it. There was no rush to force her into something that made her uneasy. After all, Matilda had already shown remarkable strength and trust. In time, perhaps she would become more comfortable, but for now, her happiness was the priority.

Besides the collar, everything else in her life seemed to bring her nothing but joy. She became deeply attached to her foster family, especially to the youngest human in the house. Matilda formed a special bond with the family’s son, and the two became nearly inseparable.

She would follow him around the house, sit beside him while he did his homework, and even nudge his pencil or rest her head on his lap when he needed encouragement. It was as if she sensed when he was struggling and tried to offer emotional support in her own way. Her presence had a calming effect on him, and it was clear that she was becoming not just a pet, but a beloved companion.

As weeks passed, Matilda’s story began to spread online. Her resilience, her joyful tail, and her loving nature inspired everyone who heard about her. She was living proof that even animals who come from traumatic beginnings can blossom into loving, loyal companions when given a chance.

Her journey from a sick stray on the streets of Georgia to a happy, tail-wagging foster pup reminded people that sometimes, the ones who have the least to give end up giving the most. Matilda had every reason to be fearful or withdrawn, but instead, she chose joy. She chose to trust. She chose to love.

For the Douglas County Animal Shelter and everyone involved in her rescue, Matilda was more than just another dog passing through. She was a beacon of hope and a shining example of why animal rescue matters. And for her foster family, she became a source of laughter, healing, and unconditional love.

Though her forever home had not yet been found, one thing was certain—wherever Matilda ended up, she would continue to bring happiness to everyone around her. Because some dogs don’t just get rescued—they rescue others right back.
