A barn owl named Stardust, who was hand-fed as a chick, has formed a strong friendship with two dogs named Sam and Fergus. The dogs became friends with Stardust when they licked up its spilled food, creating a lasting bond between them. Stardust often flies down to play with the dogs and even lands on them while they are sleeping.

Stardust roams the house with her furry canine companions as they explore new games to play. Claire Stafford, a nursery nurse from Warrington, Cheshire, shared, “They have all grown up together and get along brilliantly. Stardust, who was hand-reared, is not afraid of humans.” The unlikely trio of a barn owl, beagles, and human family have forged a unique and surprising bond. Stafford explained, “We welcomed Stardust into our home when she was just three weeks old, so she has essentially grown up alongside the dogs.” Despite the challenges of caring for a barn owl and the mischievous nature of beagles, the group has formed a tight-knit friendship. Stafford recalled a touching moment when Sam, one of the beagles, helped clean up Stardust when she was unwell by licking food off her face – a heartwarming display of their friendship.
Claire lovingly cared for Stardust when she was just three weeks old, having to feed her with a syringe. However, at times the owl would spill her food, which was promptly cleaned up by Sam and Fergus.
Watch out! The dogs have become accustomed to Stardust swooping down to perch on their heads even while they nap. Stardust calls an aviary home just across the road from Claire, her husband Paul, and their two dogs. However, the feathered friend often crosses the road to pay a visit to Claire’s household.
“As Sam (one of the dogs) has gotten older, they’ve formed a strong bond,” Claire shared. “Stardust will glide down and cozy up next to both dogs, sometimes attempting to land on them. If we’re outside and Stardust spots their tails wagging, she’ll swoop down and playfully nip at them.
“Stardust is quite mischievous with a feisty attitude. She will give you a sly look as if she’s challenging you. When you try to pick her up, she’ll tease you by flying away at the last moment, engaging in playful antics and games.”
Claire expressed her hope that Stardust and the dogs will age gracefully together, delighting in the sight of their joy and camaraderie.
Stardust loves to play with Sam and Fergus, teasing them by landing on the ground and daring them to chase her. The two beagles, always eager for a game, bound after her in a comical display of energy and excitement. Stardust, of course, has the ultimate advantage—just as they think they’ve caught up, she effortlessly takes to the air, circling above them before swooping down again. The chase never grows old, and their playful antics fill the yard with life and laughter.
Claire often watches this unusual game with delight, marveling at how naturally the trio interacts. “It’s like they have their own little language,” she muses. “Stardust will chirp or flap her wings a certain way, and Sam and Fergus respond instantly, as if they understand exactly what she wants.”
Sometimes, Stardust perches on a nearby fence post, tilting her head inquisitively as the dogs bark up at her, their tails wagging in excitement. She seems to enjoy testing their patience, waiting until just the right moment before gliding down to ruffle their fur with her wings. The moment she touches them, the chase resumes, filling the air with joyful barks and the soft, rhythmic beat of wings.
At night, when the house quiets down, Stardust often perches on the back of the couch, watching television with Claire and her husband Paul. The dogs curl up beside them, occasionally glancing at their feathery friend as if expecting her to start another game. But during these calm moments, Stardust is content just to be part of the family.
“She’s incredibly affectionate in her own way,” Claire says. “She’ll preen the dogs’ ears or gently nibble on Paul’s fingers. And when she wants attention, she has this funny way of hopping toward you, almost like she’s demanding cuddles.”
Despite her feisty nature, Stardust is deeply attached to her family. She recognizes their voices, responding with soft hoots whenever they call her name. If Claire is in the garden and Stardust is in her aviary, she’ll flutter excitedly, waiting for the moment when she can cross the road and rejoin her canine friends.
One particularly touching memory stands out to Claire—the time Sam fell ill. The aging beagle, who had always been the liveliest of the trio, suddenly became sluggish and weak. He spent most of his days resting, barely responding to Fergus or Stardust’s playful attempts to rouse him.
During this difficult time, Stardust showed a different side of herself. Instead of teasing Sam, she stayed close by, perching beside him for hours. Sometimes she would lightly nudge his fur with her beak or preen his ears in an almost comforting gesture. Fergus, too, lay beside Sam, resting his head on his companion’s back.
“It was as if they understood something was wrong,” Claire recalls, her voice thick with emotion. “Stardust wasn’t her usual playful self—she was gentle, quiet, and incredibly patient. I’ll never forget the way she watched over Sam, as if she was looking out for him.”
Thankfully, with proper care and rest, Sam gradually regained his strength. The day he finally stood up and wagged his tail again, Stardust celebrated in her own way—by immediately swooping down and playfully nipping at his ears. Fergus barked excitedly, and in no time, the three were back to their usual antics.
Their bond, strengthened through years of companionship, remains unbreakable. Whether it’s playfully chasing each other in the garden, curling up together in the warmth of the house, or simply watching the world go by from their favorite spot near the window, Stardust, Sam, and Fergus are more than just an odd trio—they are family.
As Claire watches them now, she can’t help but feel grateful for the beautiful, unexpected friendships that have blossomed in her home. “People always say animals stick to their own kind,” she reflects with a smile. “But if Stardust, Sam, and Fergus have taught me anything, it’s that love and friendship know no boundaries.”
